Conquering an Abseil
If I have learned one thing this week, it’s that while your mind might want you to do something – your body doesn’t always agree.
Yes, I’m talking about the mammoth abseil that I took part in today.
As I travelled to Canary Wharf, I thought I’d be OK. As I put my harness on, I thought I’d be OK. Standing with my helmet in the queue, I thought I’d be OK. But when I stepped back off that wall, I wasn’t OK.
Now, I’m not someone to shy away from challenges. I’ve recently taken part in scuba diving, white water rafting and indoor skydiving for the first time and loved it all.
But, it is in no way natural to step backwards of a wall hundreds of feet in the air. And my body made sure I knew it.
My legs were shaking, my hands wouldn’t let go at the top, and I couldn’t look down. It’s a shame as I’d imagine there were some incredible views, but I just couldn’t bring myself to take them in.
In case you’re wondering, I did make it from the roof down to the floor. And no, I didn’t use the lift.
I made the abseil from top to bottom – but have to admit that I was pretty happy to be back on firm ground.
Would I do it again? Well yes, but don’t ask me why. As I’m fairly sure that I wouldn’t enjoy it next time either!
Which adventure sport do you think is most scary?
